AFL season reduced to 17-rounds

The AFL season will be condensed to a 17 week home-and-away season but it is still unclear whether the season will begin on Thursday night.

AFL CEO Gill McLachlan said a decision on whether the competition will start as fixtured will be made after a phone hook up between players and the league on Monday evening.

The AFL Players Association will hold two separate briefings with AFL and AFLW players starting from 7pm AEDT on Monday night to gauge the players' stance of playing this weekend.

The first four weeks of the fixture will remain the same but then the AFL will re-work the next 13-weeks with the AFL committed to keep the finals format as is.
