Aussie reaches new heights on world stage

Eleanor Patterson has won gold for Australia for the first time ever in the women's high jump at the World Athletics Championships.

Patterson jumped a joint Australian record of 2.02m in the final to become a world champion.

It took two personal bests and on the brink of missing out on a medal after failing to clear the 2m bar on her first attempt.

The other three competitors all cleared the 2m line but failed to clear 2.02m which Patterson was able to jump on her first attempt.

Fellow Aussie Nicola Olyslagers who won Silver at the Tokyo Olympics last year finished sixth.

26-year-old Patterson becomes the first goal medallist since Kelsey Lee-Barber who in 2019 claimed the highest podium finish in Javelin.
