Aussies win Boxing Day

Australia have finished on top at 4-257 after the opening day of the second Test against New Zealand at the MCG.

Over 80,000 fans packed into the stadium to record the greatest ever non Ashes opening day crowd of a Boxing Day Test match.

New Zealand sent the Aussies in under overcast skies and the returning Trent Boult had automatic success claiming opener Joe Burns for a golden duck.

David Warner (41) and Marnus Labuschagne (63) put together a partnership of 60 before Warner edged up to second slip to a classic one hand catch from Tim Southee.

Labuschagne fell victim to Colin DeGrandhomme when the ball came off Marnus elbow and back onto the stumps.

Matthew Wade (38) fought hard before being caught behind.

Smith finished the day 77 not out and Travis Head 25 not out.
