Barty and Millman through to third round



Australians Ash Barty and John Millman are through to the third round of the 2020 Australian Open after victories on day three of the tournament.


Barty breezed past Slovenian Polona Hercog in straight sets 6-1, 6-4 at Rod Laver Arena, the world number one booking a round three berth with world number 29 Elena Rybakina on Friday.


The news wasn't so good for Astra Sharma, who having had to wait till Wednesday for her opening match of the tournament lost to Anett Kontaveit 6-0, 6-2.


Reigning champion Naomi Osaka is also through to the third round, trouncing China's Zheng Saisai 6-2, 6-4, while Serena Williams had little trouble in dispatching Tamara Zidansek 6-2, 6-3 in just over an hour.


15 year old teenage sensation Coco Gauff continued her dream run at just her third Grand Slam, coming from a set down to defeat Sorana Cirstea 4-6, 6-3, 7-5.


John Millman set up a match up with Roger Federer as the 30 year old Aussie won in straight sets over Hubert Hurkacz 6-4, 7-5, 6-3 in a match that lasted more than two hours.


Federer breezed past Serbian Filip Krajinovic in his match 6-1, 6-4, 6-1 tonight at Rod Laver Arena, but local Jordan Thompson couldn't take down Italian Fabio Fognini, losing in a five set heartbreaker 7-6, 6-1, 3-6, 4-6, 7-6 (10-4) at Margaret Court Arena.


Fellow Aussie Marc Polmans had his run ended by Dusan Lajovic, while reigning men's champion Novak Djokovic won over Japan's Tatsuma Ito 6-1, 6-4, 6-2.


Top seeded Australian male Nick Krygios headlines day 4 action, playing Frenchman Gilles Simon on Thursday night.
