Barty breaks 44-year old drought
Ash Barty has become the first Aussie to win a home grand slam since 1978 after defeating American 27th seed Danielle Collins 6-3-7-6.
There was nervous moments for the Queensland who went 5-1 down in the second set after Collins broke her serve twice.
Barty fought back breaking back on two occasions to then go on a claim the title.
Barty said she was lucky to have so much love in her corner.
“As an Aussie, the most important part of this tournament is being able to share it with so many people and you guys in the crowd have been nothing short of exceptional.
“This crowd is one of the most fun I’ve played in front of.
“You forced me to play my best tennis.
“This is a dream come true and I’m so glad to be an Aussie.”
The-25-year-old continues her perfect run of victories when making grand slam finals now three from three.
