Bassett quits Super Netball competition

Australian Diamonds captain Caitlin Bassett has sensationally opted out of her contract with a year still to run with GWS Giants, opting instead to join Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic in New Zealand after enduring a frustrating Super Netball season in 2020.
Western Australian born Bassett played limited court time in season 2020 for the Giants, due to the introduction of the two goal super shot rule, often spending long stretches of matches on the bench leading to speculation around her future with the club.
Bassett said getting more court time was behind her decision to move to the Magic on a one year deal, with the option of a second year.
"My time with the Giants didn't play out as anticipated and I guess that's just sport sometimes," she said in a Giants statement.
"I am grateful for the opportunity that the club provided me and the friendships that I've made, but I need to make the right decision for what's best for me and my netball career moving forward."
The move won't affect the 32 year old's position in the Australian Diamonds squad, according to new coach Stacey Marinkovich.
"Caitlin is a valued member of the Diamonds squad and we look forward to working with her and the rest of the group as we prepare for the resumption of international competition in 2021," she said.
Bassett made her international debut for the Diamonds in 2008 and was a member of the World Cup-winning squads in 2011 and 2015.
