Harley Bennell has announced his retirement from AFL football bringing an end to his 88-game career.

Bennell announced his decision on Instagram on Monday morning that read "Best 10 years of my life. Thank you to everyone that was involved. It was an awesome ride."

The 27-year-old started his career Gold Coast Suns after being drafted there from Peel Thunder in the 2010 AFL draft.

He joined Fremantle at the end of 2015 but after consistent injuries was released from his contract in July last year.

Melbourne gave Bennell a lifeline and was able to play five games for the club. He finishes with 98 goals to his name.
