Brilliant Devine sets up Scorchers win

Perth Scorchers captain Sophie Devine has produced one of the innings of the WBBL 06 tournament, striking 103 from 68 balls to set up a 36 run win over the Sydney Sixers at Hurstville Oval on Sunday.

Devine added 151 with opening partner Beth Mooney (60) to set up a strong score of 4-183 batting first, both capitalising on the powerplay overs 1-6.

Devine made her first century for her new WBBL franchise, striking five fours and seven sixes in a whirlwind knock.

Mooney and Megan Banting fell in consecutive balls to Dane Van Niekerk, but with Devine at the crease the runs continued to tick over with 184 the target for the Sixers.

Having conceded 40 runs in 4 overs with the ball Ellyse Perry could only make six opening the innings for the home side, Taneale Peschel trapping her on the crease to pin her LBW.

When fellow Australian international Ash Gardner fell to the same bowler for one two overs later the Sixers were in a world of trouble, the Scorchers in complete control of the match.

Alyssa Healy was only able to make 18 before edging behind off Heather Graham, Erin Burns (34) and Marizane Kapp (64 not out) producing the only real partnership of note in adding 62 for the fourth wicket.

The boundaries didnt come regularly enough though for the Sixers, who fell 36 runs short in posting a score of 5-147 from their 20 overs.

Peschel and Graham each took two wickets for the winners, who now improve their record to two wins and three losses (with two no results) from their seven matches, having suffered an eight wicket defeat to the Melbourne Stars on Saturday.

The Sixers and Scorchers will meet again on Wednesday at Blacktown International SportsPark.
