Carey to make Test debut at the Gabba

South Australian wicket-keeper batsman Alex Carey has been selected as the man to replace Tim Paine behind the stumps for the start of the 2021/22 Ashes series.

The announcement comes just days after the 30 year old scored an impressive 101 off 93 balls in the Redbacks Marsh One Day Cup clash with the Bulls.

He won the race to replace Paine ahead of West Australian Josh Inglis, who has been away touring with the team for the T20 World Cup in the UAE.

Over the past three seasons in the Sheffield Shield, the left hander has been a consistent run scorer averaging 59.64, scoring four centuries.

The first Test of the Ashes series gets underway on Wednesday at the Gabba.
