Claremont looms as potential venue for WA-SA clash

Claremont Oval are front runners to host the State match between WA and South Australia next Sunday if the Optus Stadium surface prevents the game being played there.

The 99th meeting of the two States is due to be played as the curtain-raiser to the West Coast-Melbourne match on Sunday afternoon.

But concerns about the condition of the Perth Stadium grass means the State game might have to be moved at late notice to prevent further damage before the AFL game.

Claremont have confirmed to the WA Football Commission that they could host the match.

A decision is likely to be made by Monday.

Venues Live, which runs WA’s main football stadium, expected the State clash to remain as the AFL curtain-raiser but would monitor the ground during the week.

“Conditions including weather will continue to be assessed during the week and we will work closely with the WAFC and West Coast Eagles,” a spokesman said.

Fremantle, Leederville and Bassendean ovals, and Lathlain and Rushton parks, have all hosted interstate matches this century after games were moved away from the former Subiaco Oval.

But a push by WA players to play on the State’s main ground, and WAFC’s desire to showcase the match, has seen the past two games played at Optus Stadium.

Claremont Oval, which operates as Revo Fitness Stadium, has a capacity of about 3500 and the newest facilities in the league.

The Black Swans have not won for five seasons but are looking for their 49th victory over SA to nearly square the ledger with their longest rival who have won 50 games.

South Fremantle midfielder Isiah Winder has been added to the State squad while West Perth defender Noah Pegoraro has withdrawn after not being able to overcome a hamstring concern.

East Perth ruckman Scott Jones and Subiaco forward Jack Mayo were unfit to play for their clubs today and will be assessed on

Monday before their inclusion in the squad is confirmed.
