D'Agostino double leads Glory to victory

Two goals from young gun Nick D'Agostino has helped Perth Glory to an entertaining 4-2 win over Wellington Phoenix at HBF Park on Friday night.

The 21 year old, who last month helped the Olyroos qualify for the 2020 Olympics, scored either side of the half time whistle, helping his side to a commanding 3-0 lead after Tomislav Mrcela opened the scoring in the 43rd minute.

It had been a tense opening to the game with Wellington looking the more dangerous of the two teams, but Perth's defence holding up resolutely.

Mrcela scored after a cross from Neil Kilkenny took a deflection off Phoenix defenders and sat up for a comfortable header, before D'Agostino took centre stage with some superb work inside the box.

It appeared the home team was on the way to a comfortable win at 3-0 with just over 20 minutes remaining, but Wellington made a game of it with two goals to substitute Gary Hooper had the fans nervous in the dying stages.

The Phoenix couldn't find an equaliser, finishing the game with ten men after defender Tim Payne was controversially shown a second yellow card and subsequent red for a challenge on D'Agostino.

The home faithful were breathing far easier when star recruit Bruno Fornaroli blasted one home to make it 4-2, making it nine games on the bounce without defeat for Tony Popovic's men.

Earlier in the evening Melbourne City earnt bragging rights over their local rivals Melbourne Victory, star striker Jamie Maclaren's goal in the 71st minute the difference in the match.

Perth has the bye in round 19, before returning to action on Sunday February 22nd with a match against Brisbane Roar at Redcliffe.
