Djokovic wins 10th Australian Open title

Novak Djokovic has extended his Australian Open dominance, dispatching Stefanos Tsitsipas in straight sets to win his 10th title at Melbourne Park.

The 35 year old Serbian won 6-3 7-6 7-6 to claim his 22nd Grand Slam singles title, drawing even with rival Rafael Nadal to hold the men’s record.

Tsitsipas failed to put his best foot forward in his second Grand Slam final, with the Greek’s relative inexperience telling as he made 42 unforced errors to Djokovic’s 22.

Djokovic was controversially deported from the country before last year’s tournament due to issues surrounding his COVID-19 vaccine exemption, with a standard three year visa ban overturned to allow him to compete in this year’s edition.

“I want to thank everyone who made me come back and made me welcome … there is a reason why I have played my best tennis on this court in Australia,” Djokovic said while accepting the Norman Brooks Challenge Cup.

On Saturday night Aryna Sabalenka won a memorable women's singles final, defeating Elena Rybakina in three sets 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 to record her first Grand Slam title, while Australian pair Rinky Hijikata and Jason Kubler won their doubles match in straight sets 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) over Hugo Nys and Jan Zielinski.
