Dockers ready for Cats: Houghton

Fremantle Dockers forward Gemma Houghton believes her side is ready for what the 2020 AFLW season has to throw at them, ahead of their season opener against Geelong at Fremantle Oval on Sunday.

Houghton was the club's leading goal scorer in 2019 as the Dockers reached a preliminary final, and the Swan Districts product is confident of another strong year ahead for the team in purple.

"2019 for us was really enjoyable," Houghton told Sports Drive on Tuesday.

"We were able to win all our games at home in front of our home crowd, we love playing at Fremantle Oval. We reflected on our 2019 season and we've come in to 2020 that little bit more hungrier."

Trent Cooper's side won six of their eight matches last year, only to be knocked out of the finals by Carlton in the preliminary final.

The 26 year old was hopeful of a strong first up performance against the Cats.

"We played them over there and beat them last year, this year they have to travel over here (to Perth). I think for us we know how they like to play, they have got a very young side but they also have some experienced players." she said.

"We don't ever go in to any game not prepared in that sense, every game for us is important, but at the same time we back ourselves playing in front of our home crowd this Sunday."

Fremantle and West Coast play each other in the inaugural AFLW derby in round two, with all funds from the match donated to the Australian bushfire relief fund.

Houghton said it was a great cause for both clubs to get behind.

"It's going to be a great day for anyone who loves their footy, come on down and support the first derby and raise money for those who need it."

Bouncedown for Fremantle and Geelong is at 5:10 PM on Sunday at Fremantle Oval.
