Dockers to seek new AFLW direction

The Fremantle Dockers have let go AFLW coach Trent Cooper after five seasons in the role.

Cooper was not offered a contract extension after a poor season finishing in 12th position despite taking the side to finals in four of his five years in charge.

After an end-of-season review Dockers CEO Simon Garlick said it was time for a new direction.

“It’s been a challenging period for our AFLW program and this is something we acknowledged when we sat down with Trent,” Garlick said.

“As part of our review process into AFLW season seven, it became apparent that we’re looking for a reset and refresh in our approach."

Freo were plagued by injuries in 2022 including Kara and Ebony Antonio who played just three games between them, defender Janelle Cuthbertson missed half a season and Kiara Bowers and Hayley Miller has hit and miss seasons after stop and start pre-seasons.

Cooper in a statement said it was a tough moment for him.

“I have met some special people over my time here and I’m extremely proud of what we have been able to achieve together.”
