Eagles great suffers heart attack

West Coast Eagles dual premiership player and 1992 Norm Smith Medal winner Peter Matera has suffered a heart attack in Bendigo.

The 53 year old is currently recovering in a Bendigo Hospital.

A South Fremantle product, Matera played 253 games for the Eagles and is considered one of the club's greatest ever players, brothers Phil and Wally having also played for the club.

Matera, who currently resides in Victoria was set to return to Perth next month for the club's 30th year premiership celebrations of their 1992 flag, in which he was adjudged best afield with five goals from 18 disposals on a wing.

More to come.
