Federer and Djokovic qualify for semi-finals

Long time combatants Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic will battle it out for a spot in the 2020 Australian Open Men's singles final, after contrasting wins in their respective quarter finals on Tuesday.

Federer conjured a second great escape in the tournament, saving seven match points in the fourth set against little known American Tennis Sandgren to win an epic match 6-3, 2-6, 2-6, 7-6 (10-8) 6-3 at Rod Laver Arena.

Federer battled injury during the contest, calling for several medical timeouts in a match his opponent largely dominated.

But the 20 time Grand Slam winner dug deep to win the fourth set tie break, breaking his opponent at 3-2 in the deciding set to record a memorable victory, his second five set win after defeating John Millman in a similarly thrilling third round match.

Djokovic won through in less dramatic style, winning 6-4, 6-3, 7-6 (7-1) over Canadian Milos Raonic, the Serbian well placed to defend his 2019 Australian Open crown.

The semi-final meeting between the pair will be their 50th meeting on the ATP tour, Djokovic leading the head to head battle 26 wins to 23.

The other men's quarter finals will take place tomorrow, with Rafael Nadal playing Dominic Thiem and Stan Warwinka up against Alexander Zverev.
