German returns to WAFL with Demons

Dual Subiaco premiership coach Peter German will return to WAFL coaching ranks in 2023, signing a three-year deal to coach Perth.

The former North Melbourne player returns after spending more than 15 years out of the WAFL system, coaching VFL clubs Casey Scorpions, Williamstown and Coburg as well as spending time with AFL clubs Fremantle and Western Bulldogs.

Most recently German has coached in the Ovens and Murray Football League, coaching Albury Tigers in 2019 and Corowa-Rutherglen in 2021-22.

Perth will be German's third WAFL club as a senior coach, starting with Peel Thunder in 2002 before taking the reins at Subiaco in 2003, leading the club to premierships in 2004 and 2006 and setting them up as a powerhouse of the competition, the club having won nine premierships in the past 20 years.

German replaces Garry Moss as Demons coach, the former Hawk resigning in August after just seven wins in his 34 games in charge.

Despite his rich footballing pedigree German faces a steep task to guide Perth up the table, the club having only made finals once since 1997 and without a premiership since 1976.
