Gold Trip wins 2022 Melbourne Cup

Gold Trip has won the 2022 Melbourne Cup giving trainers Ciaron Maher and Dave Eustace their first Melbourne Cup victory.

The French stayer settled midfield before making its move and hitting the front 250m from the finish.

The six-year-old went on to make history, becoming only the third topweight in nearly seven decades to win the Cup, joining three-time winner Makybe Diva (2005) and Rising Fast (1954).

Emissary finished strongly to finished second, High Emocean did its best work late to run hard into fourth and race favourite Deauville Legend made up the top four.

Winning jockey Mark Zahra who has brought up his first Melbourne Cup victory said it was "unbelievable."

"I can't [put this into words]. I feel like crying. It's unbelievable. What a day," he said.

"He's a horse that when you go, you don't give him a chance to think about it. I was hoping no-one would come near me."
