Hopewell wins WA Open

Young amateur Hayden Hopewell has won the 2020 Nexus Risk WA Open at Royal Fremantle Golf Course on Sunday.

Having finished runner up to winner Michael Sim in 2019, the 18 year old saluted at a final round score of 68, finishing the tournament seven under par to conquer the difficult conditions at Royal Fremantle, with strong winds and fast greens making things difficult for players over the three round 54 hole tournament.

Brody Martin held a three shot lead heading in to the final day, but Hopewell was able to stay within reach of the lead for much of the round, back-to-back birdies and holes 16 and 17 propelled the young-gun into the lead where he was able to stay thanks to a further birdie at the last.

The win was made sweeter by the pain and disappointment of last year's tournament where Hopewell led for most the four days, only to be pipped by Michael Sim in the closing stages.

The triumph also came at Hopewell's local club, saluting in front of family and friends, conquering a course he knows as well as anyone in the state.

The win marks Hopewell's maiden ISPS HANDA PGA Tour of Australasia win.

Fellow amateur Haydn Barron has finished in second place at 6-under, ahead of Brody Martin in third at 5-under the card.
