Kokkanakis wins maiden ATP title
Thanasi Kokkanakis has landed a major breakthrough in his career claiming his maiden ATP title.
Kokkinakis lit up his home court at Memorial Drive Tennis Centre in Adelaide as he shrugged off a first-set deficit to beat Frenchman Arthur Rinderknech 6-7, 7-6, 6-3.
It continues an amazing comeback after overcoming shoulder, pectoral, groin, knee and elbow injuries and a serious bout of glandular fever had stripped him of long periods of tennis over five years.
“I wouldn’t want to win my first title anywhere else,” he told the crowd.
“You guys have seen me at my lowest lows and now my highest highs,”
Kokkanakis will enter the opening round at the Australian Open on Monday and if successful will take on Rafael Nadal in the second round.
