Krygios defeats Sonego



Top ranked Australian male Nick Krygios has qualified for the second round of the 2020 Australian Open, defeating Italian Lorenzo Sonego in straight sets on Tuesday night.


World number 53 Sonego challenged Krygios for most of the match, taking the second and third sets to tie breaks but unable to claim a set over the Australian who sealed the result in just over two hours 6-2 7-6 (3) 7-6 (1).


In all ten Australians have made it through to the second round of the tournament, Alex Bolt winning a five set thriller against Spaniard Albert Ramos-Vinolas 7-6, 1-6, 6-7, 6-1 6-4 while Alexi Popyrin was two sets to one up against Frenchman Jo Wilfried Tsonga when his opponent had to retire do to injury.


John Millman, Jordan Thompson, Marc Polmans won their matches earlier in the day, John Duckworth and Chris O'Connell unable to join them after first round defeats to Russian pair Aljaz Bedene and Andrey Rublev respectively.


As for the Aussie women Ajla Tomljanovic was dominant in her first round match against Anastasija Sevastova winning 6-1 6-1, while Priscilla Hon defeated Ukranian Kateryna Kozlova 6-3 6-4.


Astra Sharma will start her tournament on Wednesday against Annett Kontaveit, while Ash Barty plays her second round match Polona Hercog.
