Nadal out in the second round of Australian Open

Defending Australian Open champion Rafael Nadal is out of the competition, defeated in straight sets.

Nadal injured his hip during the match but battled on to eventually lose out to American Mackenzie McDonald 6-4, 6-4, 7-5 in their second round clash.

In his post match press conference Nadal said he did not want to retire hurt.

"I didn't want to leave the court with a retirement. Better like this in the end. I lost.

"That's the sport at the same time. Just try your best til the end. It doesn't matter the chances that you have.

"That's the philosophy of the sport. That's the essence of the sport by itself.

"I tried to follow that during my tennis career."

Nadal was down 4-6, 3-4 when he bent over in pain after stretching for a forehand.

Despite a medal timeout Nadal continued to struggle without full range of movement.

It's the time first that the Spaniard has been knocked out of a grand slam in the second round since the Australian Open in 2016.
