NBL to be played on Christmas Day

The Sydney Kings and Melbourne United will do battle for NBL points for the first time on Christmas Day.

In an Australian sporting first the two teams will go head to head in Sydney in a prime time Sunday night clash tipping off at 7:30pm AEDT.

Other sporting codes including the BBL has been reluctant to break tradition.

NBL Commissioner Jeremy Loeliger said the NBL were thrilled to be the first professional sporting code to bring sport to Christmas Day.

“Christmas Day has become a marquee day on the NBA calendar and we’re confident it will have a similar impact for us and our clubs.

“The Kings have been very proactive in wanting to host the first Christmas Day game and we’re confident they’ll do a great job.”

Sydney Kings Chairman & Co-Owner Paul Smith said it was a "game changer".

“It’s the last scheduling frontier in sport in Australia,” Smith said.

“We are a changing society. Christmas isn’t a holy event for all of us, and it can be a lonely day for a lot of people.

The full 2022/23 Hungry Jack's NBL schedule will be released on Monday, July 25.
