Peel seal fifth spot

Peel Thunder has locked away fifth spot on the WAFL ladder, thrashing Swan Districts by 92 points at Rushton Park on Sunday.

In what was billed as a virtual elimination final with the winner to secure a finals spot, Peel kicked 12 goals to 2 in a dominant first half on their way to a 20.18 (128) to 5.6 (36) demolition job of Swans.

Sam Sturt kicked 4 goals for the winners, one of 15 Fremantle listed players to feature in the match in what was Peel's strongest team of the season.

Matt Taberner kicked 2 goals on his return from a calf injury, while midfield trio Mitch Crowden (38 disposals), Neil Erasmus (32) and Connor Blakely (31) all getting plenty of the ball, Lloyd Meek continuing his dominant season at WAFL level with 22 disposals and 3 goals.

Darcy Tucker left the game early in the first term with a knee injury, while Swans star midfielder Sam Fisher hurt his ankle moments later to leave both teams down a player early, although Fisher bravely returned on one leg before finally succumbing in the third quarter.

The result sets up an elimination final with 2021 Grand Finalists South Fremantle this Sunday at 12:10 PM, while second placed East Fremantle hosts Claremont at East Fremantle Oval on Saturday at 1:30 PM for a chance to play West Perth in the 2nd Semi-Final.

The winner of that match will progress straight through to the Grand Final on October 1st at Leederville Oval.

Earlier in the weekend the top four sides all had victories to hold their spots on the ladder, setting up a fascinating WAFL finals series.
