Pike lands Melbourne Cup ride

Champion WA jockey William Pike has committed to riding Schabu in the 2020 Melbourne Cup.

Schabu won a trio of races earlier this year in Melbourne culminating in the listed Roy Higgins Quality (2600m).

Pike is almost certain now to spend the spring carnival in the east with a number of Bob and Sandra Peters runners already in town.

Schabu's owners led by Perth's Geoff Evans said they were always keen to book Pike.

“It was spoken about for a while, but with the opportunity of William being in Melbourne at the time he was offered the mount,” Evans said.

“It will make for a great story if we can pull it off.

“We have to get the horse to qualify for the Melbourne Cup, but we are giving him the best chance possible."
