Suns rise in the west over the Eagles

For the time in their history the Gold Coast Suns have defeated the West Coast Eagles in Perth.

The Eagles hung tough for three and a half quarters before the Suns found the finishing touches to run away 27-point winners.

West Coast led by six-points at three quarter time but a tired defence withered conceding eight goals in the run home as the Suns took a major step forward to record a 16.11.107 to 12.8.80 victory.

Matt Rowell starred for the Suns collecting 33 disposals and 10 clearances while Izak Rankine booted four goals from his 23 touches.

Gold Coast won the inside 50m count 59-42, contested possessions 155-122, and tackles 57-37.

Eagles coach Adam Simpson said that his side would take a lot from the night's performance.

"We tried really hard at our roles tonight. But we got overwhelmed in the contest. But we did have a crack. I saw some really good improvement, but we are here to win. We are really disappointed.”

“Free kick goals, those things hurt. We got stuck deep in our defensive fifty and no team can survive that. We got outdone in the contest, but credit to Gold Coast, their good players stood up.”

Jack Petrucelle, Josh Kennedy and Jarmaine Jones all booted two goals each for the Eagles.

West Coast now face North Melbourne on Sunday at Marvel Stadium.
