Tokyo games under no threat

The Australian Olympic Committee has quelled concerns raised that the games in Japan could be cancelled or deferred in the wake of the coronavirus.

CEO Matt Carroll speaking on Melbourne Radio Station SEN said that at this stage the virus had not proved to be an issue for organisers.

“Ourselves, the International Olympic Committee and the organisers will never put athletes, whether they be ours or from around the world in any harm’s way. Carroll said.

“Preparations are continuing, the IOC is in day-to-day contact with the World Heath Organisation, as are the organisers of the games in Tokyo and the Japanese Government.”

Recent qualifying events including women's soccer have been moved away from China while the J-League, Japan's soccer league has been postponed until March 15.

The organisers continue to have regular dialogue with the World Health Organisation and the Japanese Government.
