WAFL grand final to come forward two weeks

John Townsend

The WAFL grand final will be shifted back to the weekend before the AFL version after the WA Football Commission reneged on its earlier commitment to an October decider.

Eight of the 10 WAFL clubs were opposed to the later grand final date and urged the WAFC last week to bring the match forward.

It might now be played at Optus Stadium given that another event was going to make it impossible to fixture it there on the proposed October 7 date.

The 2022 WAFL grand final was considered a strong success after being moved to Leederville Oval the week after the AFL play-off.

But most WAFL clubs want to play the game at Optus, which could get a crowd significantly larger than the 17,000 who saw West Perth see off Claremont this year.
