WAFL sets August start date

The 2020 WAFL season will commence in August, the Western Australian Football Commission confirmed on Friday.
Doubts have lingered around a potential season due to government restrictions that would impact the prospect of crowds and subsequent revenue at games, but a nine round season commencing Saturday August 1 has been ticked off by the commission with fixtures set to be revealed next week.
Full details around the fixture, finals format, player payments and the financial model will be discussed over the coming days, following a board meeting on Tuesday 26th May.
WAFC CEO Gavin Taylor was excited to announce a start date for the season.
“The WAFC appreciates the collaboration between the WAFL Presidents and CEOs at each club to reach an agreement during what has been a very difficult period with our industry facing significant financial challenges,” he said.
Taylor said games could be played without crowds, and decisions around crowd attendances at games will be made in accordance with expert health advice and government guidelines.
The WAFL Women’s season is also set to start on the same weekend, running concurrently with the WAFL season.
