Wildcats legend Martin retires

Six time NBL championship winner Damian Martin has announced his retirement from NBL basketball.

A veteran of 342 games over 13 seasons, Martin made the decision to call time on his stellar career on Tuesday after having major achilles surgery in April.

The 35 year old joined the Wildcats in 2009, going on to win six NBL championship rings (all as captain), winning the Grand Final MVP in 2016 in Perth's triumph over the New Zealand Breakers.

It was defensively that Martin made his mark on the court, renowned for his willingness to scrap and hustle for every disputed ball in winning six NBL Defensive Player of the Year awards.

He represented Australia at the 2016 Rio Olympics, and won Gold for his country at the 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast.

Martin began his career in Sydney with the West Sydney Razorbacks/Sydney Spirit, before making his mark with the Wildcats.

Injury was a constant theme of his career, as was his ability to recover from serious ailments quicker than expected to return to the court.
