Wildcats win pre-season opener



The Perth Wildcats have begun their pre-season with a victory, defeating an impressive young Hawks outfit 91-83 at RAC Arena on Tuesday night.


In what was the Wildcats since their second straight championship triumph in March, fans returned to the Jungle to see their side record a solid win, young guns Luke Travers and Corey Shervill impressing, the latter playing his first game for Perth.


Bryce Cotton put up 25 points in a typically robust display around the basket, new import John Mooney showing his prowess at both ends of the floor with 12 points and 8 rebounds.


The contest was close throughout, with the Wildcats finishing the game with a match-winning 8-0 run, capped off by an emphatic Bryce Cotton alley-oop slam.


Clint Steindl was his usual self from long range, posting 14 points to play a support role to Cotton.


Justinian Jessup was outstanding for Brian Goorjian's Hawks, posting 24 points to show why he was drafted by NBA franchise Golden State Warriors last month.


Tyler Harvey added 20 points of his own, a young Hawks team showing they will be a tough opposition to beat in NBL21.


The teams meet again on Thursday night at Bendat Basketball Centre, with the clubs agreeing to a second fixture as the pre-season continues ahead of the NBL season start next month.
