World number one ruled out of Australian Open

World number one Carlos Alcaraz will miss this month's Australian Open due to a leg injury.

Alcaraz was aiming to compete at the Kooying Classic as a lead into to the first grand slam of the year but posted on social media he had not recovered from the injury suffered during training.

"It's tough, but I have to be optimistic, recover and look ahead. See you in 2024 Australian Open." Alcaraz said.

The 19-year-old won his maiden grand slam title at the US Open in September.

Rafael Nadal will now assume number one seed for the tournament beginning in Melbourne on January 16.

The defending champion lost his opening match of the season in Sydney on Friday during the mixed teams United Cup tournament.

Nadal was beaten by Great Britain's Cameron Norrie 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.
