East Perth’s Corey Watts returned to WAFL World this evening to talk about their upcoming clash against West Coast and the honour of being selected in the state squad.

Earlier this week, Watts was named amongst the squad of 32 WAFL players to meet South Australia at Sullivan Logistics Stadium on 16 May.

The 25-year-old, originally from Victoria, says he is set to stay in WA and is excited to be named in the state squad, with the final 23 players announced at a later date.

“I’m engaged now to a WA-local. She’s already told me that we’re not going anywhere; I am in through and through. I’m excited to be training with some of the good players in the WAFL. We’ll see what comes of it. Exciting times, WA is in the blood now for sure.”

East Perth is well represented in the squad, with six other Royals joining Watts.

Before the action kicks off at state level, East Perth are taking on West Coast this weekend at Mineral Resources Park.

The game comes a week after East Perth’s solid win against Perth last Saturday.

Speaking on WAFL World, the key position defender says the victory was important.

“The way we started the year, we felt like we hadn’t been doing the things that got us in the position we were in the last two years, so we really stripped everything back and got to work.”

“Probably still feel like we didn’t show our best in the game on the weekend, but certainly positive steps in the right direction.”

While East Perth is playing West Coast this weekend, West Perth are going head-to-head with Peel Thunder.

West Perth coach Paul Sanzone joined WAFL World to share his thoughts on the upcoming game. The team has had a challenging season to date, yet to record a win.

Peel Thunder is not expected to be any easier, with 14 AFL-listed players in the lineup.

“It’s not going to be an easy task”, Sanzone admits.

“If we can bring our best foot forward on the weekend, the message for us going forward is if we can play four quarters of footy, I think we have no doubt we can take it up to any side in the competition.”

Other games in round five include Claremont v Swan Districts, East Fremantle v Perth, and Subiaco v South Fremantle, in a highly anticipated weekend of football.
