Many Australian tennis stars are on show as the first round of Wimbledon progresses – 13 Aussies qualified with one player already advancing.

Daria Kasatkina won her match against Britain’s Mingge Xu two sets to one, booking her spot in the second round when she takes on Indonesia’s Janice Tjen on Wednesday.

Rinky Hijikata currently leads a suspended match two sets to one, that one is set to resume later today.

The 25-year-old is up five games to three in the third set against the Netherlands’ Jesper De Jong and looks promising on grass.

Tennis expert Brett Phillips joined Sports Breakfast this morning.

“Hopefully Rinky on the resumption – he’s 5-3 up in the third against De Jong from the Netherlands and he’s got a good grass court record. When he comes back tonight I feel pretty confident that he can get that one done,” he said.

“She [Mingge Xu] took the second set off Kasatkina and we thought, okay well this is going to be an exciting third.

“She had the crowd right there but Daria, credit to her – this is her ninth Wimbledon campaign and she’s only ever gone out in the first round once… so she was able to steady the ship with all her experience.”

Aleksandar Vukic and Adam Walton’s Wimbledon campaigns were cut short last night – both Aussies going down in the first round.

Walton looked promising at the start of his match against Croatia’s Dino Prižmić after taking out the first set, but the Croatian steadied up and was able to secure the next three.

Vukic was unlucky to go down to the USA’s Jenson Brooksby in straight sets.

“Tough loss for Aleks Vukic at the start of the day, he actually served for that opening set at 5-4, lost it in a tiebreaker and then Jenson Brooksby absolutely demolished him in sets two and three to take that in straight.”

“I thought it was a disappointing one for Adam Walton, took the first up against Dino Prižmić, the young Croatian who’d never won at a Grand Slam level.

“He [Prižmić] showed a lot of promise as a young junior, played that great match against Djokovic at the AO as an 18-year-old and yeah, his first appearance at Wimbledon, he went to work on court 10 and got it done in four sets.”

Nine more Aussies are scheduled to take to the court and start their Wimbledon campaign’s tonight.

Alex de Minaur headlines as the ninth seed taking on Argentine Roman Andres Burruchaga, while Thanasi Kokkinakis will be facing off with Kazakhstan’s Alexander Bublik.

Dane Sweeney makes his Wimbledon debut against Bulgaria’s Grigor Dimitrov, James Duckworth takes on Dutch player Talon Griekspoor and Alexei Popyrin will play Jiri Lehecka from Czechia.

“Alex up against Burruchaga the Argentinian, [he’s] better known for his feats on clay so certainly favour Alex in that match.”

“Thanasi Kokkinakis, will his body hold up as he takes on the crazy Kazakh Alexander Bublik? Expect a bit of fireworks, plenty of aces in that contest.”

In the women’s matches Talia Gibson will play in her second Wimbledon tournament against Czechia’s Marie Bouzková, Kimberly Birrell takes on Alina Korneeva and Ajla Tomljanović will play Georgian Mariam Bolkvadze.

All eyes will be on 20-year-old Maya Joint as she takes on tennis superstar Serena Williams – the champion making her return to Wimbledon for the first time since a first round exit in 2022.

“Serena, we haven’t seen her on a singles court in four years and Maya Joint desperately needs a win.”

“Maya’s got to be brave, she’s just got to go after the game, play the ball in front of her and hopefully not hit it into the strike zone.

“Don’t be hitting up the middle of the court because Serena, you know, won grand slams for fun just by dictating from the middle of the court… really fascinating to see how that one plays out.”

As it stands only one of the four Aussies who played yesterday have booked their spot in the next round, with Rinky Hijikata hoping to advance with a win on resumption later today.
