WAFLW

This weekend in the WAFLW, Subiaco had a massive percentage booster, Peel left a finals contender thunderstruck, while Swan Districts and Claremont both showed why they’re top three teams.

Here is all the action from Round 17.

EAST PERTH 0.1 (1) def by. SUBIACO 10.5 (65)

Subiaco has boosted its percentage with a massive 64-point victory over co-tenants East Perth at Sullivan Logistics Stadium on Friday night.

For the fourth time this season, East Perth has been kept goalless, their only point coming from a rushed behind in the second quarter.

But for Subiaco, this boost comes as the season begins to venture into the business end, sitting only on top of the ladder above Claremont on percentage.

The return of National and State Academy members strengthened each side, but Subiaco benefited more, with Olivia Crane (20 disposals, 3 tackles) and Olivia Wolmarans (2 goals) among their best players.

Aimee Schmidt kicked three goals, while Lisa Steane (26 disposals, 10 tackles) and Paige Sheppard (26 disposals, 5 tackles) also had exceptional games in the middle.

Meanwhile, East Perth young gun Lucy Greenwood was exceptional (14 disposals, five tackles) upon return from state representative duties. Ruck Brooke Edwards (29 hit outs) also played well.

Meg McAullay (15 disposals, 2 marks), Summer Mollross (12 disposals, 10 tackles) and Saffi Jennings (14 disposals, 4 marks) all fought hard all day.

PEEL THUNDER 5.2 (32) def. SOUTH FREMANTLE 1.12 (18)

Peel has ended their season on a positive note, breaking a five-game losing streak to stun South Fremantle and claim a 14-point win at Lane Group Stadium.

Wayward goalkicking cost South Fremantle a crucial win that saw them slip to sixth as the race for the last places in finals heating up.

The Bulldogs finished on 1.12, with Annalie Polimeno kicking their only goal in the final quarter; meanwhile, Peel capitalised on their opportunities, kicking a tidy 5.2.

Chloe Wrigley racked up plenty of the ball, finishing on 25 disposals, six marks and one goal, while Ebony Dowson also played well, with 24 disposals and four marks.

Other notable performances came from Heidi Ireland (20 disposals, 3 tackles) and Ebony Bilcich (20 disposals, 6 marks).

For South Fremantle, Tahleah Mulder (23 disposals, 6 tackles) was their top disposal winner, while Renee Morgan (19 disposals, 8 tackles) played well on return from State duties.

Hunter Cronin was solid down back with 20 disposals and nine marks, while Liusaidh Gilchrist (18 disposals, 5 marks) also played well.

CLAREMONT 5.6 (36) def. WEST PERTH 3.8 (26)

Claremont have kept their hopes of top spot alive after beating West Perth by 10 points at Revo Fitness Stadium on Saturday.

With 11 scoring shots each, Claremont capitalised on its opportunities in front of goal better, kicking 5.6 to West Perth’s 3.8.

As a result, Claremont were able to stay within touching distance of the top spot with only a percentage separating them from minor premiers Subiaco, with one round to go.

Reigning Dhara Kerr medallist Jayme Harken (21 disposals, 5 tackles) and Sarah Viney (23 disposals, 11 tackles) were outstanding for Claremont.

Young gun Juliet Kelly (21 disposals, 8 tackles) also played well on return from State Representative duties, while Megan Green and Jacinta Valentini kicked two goals each.

West Perth’s young guns Lexi Stratchen (2 goals) and Ciara Dziegielewski (17 disposals, 30 hit outs) also impressed on return and were among the strongest performers for the losing side.

Meanwhile, stalwarts Madison Dodd (21 disposals, 5 marks), Taylor Ferguson (18 disposals, 9 tackles) and Jessica Roper (17 disposals, 4 tackles) all gave solid performances.

PERTH 3.6 (24) def by. SWAN DISTRICTS 6.5 (41)

Swan Districts have breezed towards a 17-point win against Perth at Mineral Resources Park on Sunday afternoon.

Wet and wild conditions were no issue for the Black Ducks as they held the home side to two behinds in the opening half, while kicking two goals themselves to set themselves up for victory.

But Perth quickly hit the scoreboard in the second half, winning the third quarter after kicking 2.3 to Swan Districts’ 2.2.

With two goals to her name, Kayley King was outstanding, also recording 23 disposals and four tackles throughout the day. Summer Yarran also had two goals.

Carys D’Addario (23 disposals, 6 inside 50s) was a welcome addition and picked up from where she left off, while Jaime Henry (20 disposals, 9 tackles) was classy as usual.

As usual, Isabella Shannon was Perth’s best, finishing on 23 disposals, seven tackles and one goal, while Milla Spalding played a career-best game after winning 18 disposals and three tackles.

Fina Dethlefsen battled her way to 12 tackles and 11 disposals, while Holly Britton once again finished as one of Perth’s standouts with 14 disposals and 9 tackles.

East Fremantle had the bye this week.
