Coming off the back of a double win round over Illawarra and South East Melbourne, the Wildcats are beginning to turn their attention toward preparing themselves for the postseason.
A win against the Phoenix at home set them up for a strong performance on the road, defeating the Hawks in Illawarra 106-99.
As the NBL approaches postseason, Wildcat’s assistant coach Ben Peterson says it is imperative that the opponent should not affect the mindset of the team.
“They’re a talented group and they were playing for their life in terms of trying to make it into the top six, they threw a great punch early,” he said.
“We did a great job of weathering the storm and chipping away throughout the night and just made huge plays when it mattered, that was a playoff type atmosphere and a playoff type win is what it felt like.”
The bench has played a huge role in the Wildcats’ success so far this season, and their ability to use it to manage players has allowed Perth to keep players fresh.
“Credit to our bench guys, they’re staying ready and making an impact when their name is called,” he said.
“Dontae, the other night in Illawarra, he may have gone two or three months without playing a game, and he stepped up big time in Jaron’s absence… it’s been great to see those guys have little cameos here and there and really impact winning.”
“The last week and a half has been pretty hectic with four games and a bit of travel so the guys that play heavy minutes we just really monitor and make sure that they’re right physically.”
“Some guys just need a break. Their bodies are worn down from the amount of minutes they’re playing and I think we do a good job of making sure that they get the rest they need.”
The Wildcats now turn their attention to Cairns at home who sit ninth on the ladder and out of playoff contention.
“If you really are truly trying to win a championship it shouldn’t matter who you’re playing, you need to handle the task in front of you.”
“That’s our philosophy and that’s the way we’re going to move.”
