Perth Scorchers bowler Jhye Richardson is set to miss the remainder of the Big Bash season, opting to undergo surgery later this week on his problematic right shoulder.

The 28-year old, who has an extensive, horror run history of injuries, decided to sit out for the rest of the summer in an attempt to reduce the risk for further injuries to his bowling arm.

In November, the West Aussie had a freak incident in which he dislocated his shoulder while high-fiving his teammates in a Sheffield Shield match at Adelaide Oval, prompting discussions with experts about medical intervention.

Speaking to SportFM, Scorchers bowling coach Tim MacDonald says Richardson made the decision in an attempt to prolong his playing career and bolster his chances to play for Australia in the future.

“It was a really hard decision for Jhye,” he said.

“He’s battled with that for a little while and he’s been talking that through with CA and mapping out exactly what it looks like and what the benefits of it are.

“The reality of it is, he was disappointed with what he could give in the field. He hasn’t been able to throw for a couple of years now and now it’s getting a stage where he can’t dive.

“Cricket Australia, they know he’s skilled with the ball, he’s good enough to pick him and they just need a bit more from him in the field.

“He’s chosen to get that done and try and prolong his career and it’s the best chance to see if he can play for Australia, so we wish him well in that.”
