East Fremantle chalked up their first victory of the 2026 WAFL season in a three-point thriller over Subiaco at Shark Park.
The Sharks maintained the lead for most of the game but the Lions were up by two heading into the final term, setting the stage for a close finish.
It was an end-to-end passage of play beginning with Kyle Baskerville at full back which saw Oscar Robinson in prime position to take a mark in the square and slot a major at the 27 minute mark.
Robinson kicked 4.1 to add to his tally of two goals last week, using all of his 194cm frame to snatch six marks for the day.
He spoke to SportFM Sports Breakfast on Tuesday morning.
“We’ve watched it back a few times and I mean, listening to that… it gave me chills again just looking at it and listening to it,” he said.
“We throw him [Baskerville] back to just try and create something and use his elite knowledge to try and create something and he did, he found Pickett.”
It was Harry Pickett who was found in a pocket of space at centre half back, then getting the footy to Oskar Smart in a contest along the wing.
Smart, kicking two goals for himself earlier in the game, took the wing on and found Alexander Montauban creating the outnumber for the Sharks and leaving Robinson’s defender caught between two men.
“[Oskar Smart] is one of the great footballers that I’ve played with who uses his body so well and finds the footy like no other.”
“I think when he [Pickett] took that mark, I just put my head down and just said, I’m going to go long, I’m going to go in the goal square and make my man make a decision to go to me or Alex.
“And sure enough, Smarty kicked it down to Monty who took a mark and my defender got caught between two.
“I was pretty nervous that they were going to point me around on the angle and I’d have to snap it on my right foot, but then I went back and sort of took my time.”
Taking up all 30 seconds to bring the game closer to the final siren, Robinson put it through the big sticks from the top of the goal square to give East Fremantle a three-point lead in the dying moments of the match.
The Sharks’ defence was able to knuckle down until the siren to see East Freo hold on in front of a home crowd.
“We had to trust that our defence would hold up in the last 30 seconds, and sure enough Monty takes another great mark again and so does Len.”
“We were able to see it out and win a pretty big day for the club in Harry Marsh’s 200th.”
The Sharks will play East Perth next Saturday at Sullivan Logistics Stadium, both teams with one win for the season so far.
