An eight goal win over Melbourne on Saturday handed the Dockers their first four points of the season in front of a packed home crowd.
Caleb Serong was kept to just 16 disposals under a tag from Koltyn Tholstrup, but Fremantle’s depth proved strong with Andrew Brayshaw and Shai Bolton picking up the slack, finishing with 39 disposals and one goal, and 32 and two respectively.
Now heading into what is expected to be a wet weekend with Cyclone Narelle heading for Perth, the Dockers are looking to their next match at home against Richmond.
Fremantle utility Corey Wagner joined Sports Breakfast this morning to talk on last week’s performance and their preparation for their upcoming clash.
“We still got a lot of work to do and JL went through some numbers in the review. We’ve only won three quarters of the eight and I think we’ve won only two quarters in terms of inside 50s,” he said.
“We put the balls in water at training and just do some ground work… I think it’s just preparing that there’s going to be a lot of ground balls and it’ll be really scrappy this weekend.
“It’s probably more the mental side of being ready for that sort of game. It’s hard to train when we don’t get much rain here, but last year I think we won most of our rainy games so it’s something we’re used to.”
Fremantle forward Pat Voss was handed a $1000 fine for taunting Demons defender Harrison Petty, which is not the first time the Prancing Pony’s passion has landed him in hot water, copping a three match ban last year for striking Nick Vlastuin.
Despite his antics on field, Wagner says the team embraces his passion and love for the game.
“We love our Vossy, he plays on the edge. Sometimes it’s what people want to see and it’s how he needs to get into the game and sometimes he might go over the edge, but that’s his personality.”
“We don’t want to change Vossy and who he is, he might have to calm down a bit sometimes, but we love that from him, it gets him involved in the game and he looks after all of us… He’s definitely someone that I love to be on the right side of.”
Sitting as the third youngest team in the competition, Richmond is a side Freo will be sure not to gloss over on the weekend, with the weather providing an element of uncertainty as we head toward Saturday.
“I think it’s probably a really big danger game. We probably could underestimate them, and that’s what we’ve been talking about this week.”
“They’re actually a very good defensive team, and I think they’re fundamentals and basics have let them down the first year around, so we’re expecting them to be very good, especially with a wet game and young kids.
“A smaller side could actually work in their favour, so we’re expecting them to be a very good defensive team.”
Saturday’s clash kicks off at 1:15pm.
